A HeartLight Experience

by Johanna Shaw

Volume I Number 1 * Spring Equinox * March 20, 2003

We invite you to imagine physical places such as our homes, community centers, and schools that call forth a state of being in which all people live, learn and lead from the heart.

Learning. Living. and Leading.

The experience of these three words demonstrates the theme of HeartLight International.

To be alive is to learn, live and lead with a light in your heart.

The Heartlight philosophy asks us to remember that we are the embodiment of Love, Joy and Wisdom. Learning to live and lead from that state of being is the essence of the Heartlight approach.

All people, community members, teachers, students, and parents, are lifelong learners.

We invite you to imagine physical places such as our homes, community centers, and schools that call forth a state of being in which all people live, learn and lead from the heart. The result is a context that encourages and sustains remembering that we are spiritual beings having a human experience.

You can remember the core of the HeartLight Curriculum by the ÒFive CÕs which are illustrated below:

  • Conscious Identity is choosing to be fully present to all aspects of our being: body, mind, emotions and spirit.
  • Creative Community Heartlight is committed to supporting all learners, in lifelong creativity.
  • Collaborative Community through collaborative social experiences learners co-create caring communities.
  • Competent Community applies and practices daily the skills and processes of an effective community.
  • Compassionate Community is being present to the wholeness of our community and living with a deep awareness of ourselves and others.

HeartLight Learning Communities enable people to thrive in wholeness, compassion, integrity and joy.

To change anything fundamentally begins in the heart, then everything else changes in response. The Greeks had a word for this - metanoia, meaning a fundamental change of heart. We also have the word "paradigm" and we speak of "paradigm shifts." Gandhi suggests the way to create a metanoia or paradigm shift is "to be the change you wish to see in the world."

Authentic change begins in the heart and ripples into the world.

ÒIt is the intention of every HeartLight Learning Community to empower learners to be fully aware of who they are and how they manifest their unique purpose in the world. We do this not by 'preparing for the future' Ð but by expressing our passions, purposes, and talents in the roles we play every day. Learners are encouraged to be aware of the support they have Ð and to ask for support they need Ð as they learn, lead, and live in a HeartLight Community.Ó

HeartLight “Declarations” of "Who We Really Are” to become central in how we “live:”

Living More Consciously. I am receptive to consciously living every day as the unique, loving spiritual being that I already am.

I am receptive to living consciously every day by mindfully focusing, experiencing, and developing my inner essence and limitless potential.

-Bill Spadey
