She Calls! by Jane Buchan
Through the dance of human populations from continent to continent, Ceres, Italian Grain Goddess inextricably linked with the Great Earth Mother, Demeter, stands on top of the Vermont State Capitol, the symbol of her nurturing presence visible in the grain she holds. In the days of the ancient ones, this Goddess was the source and destination of all life. It was She who blessed all harvest, and who, with her brothers Dionysis and Poseidon, ensured fertility.
So powerful was this Deity that she could stop all growth until her precious daughter, Persephone, was returned to her. Although the story of Persephone is often told as a rape, a very old version of the myth speaks of an eternally young aspect of the Great Mother who was willing to go down to Hades to comfort and inspire the dead as they waited for their time of rebirth. This is the Goddess from whom all Deities descend: this is Earth Herself
What is She calling us to do?
Some hear the call to work for peace; some, the call to grow nourishing organic foods; some, the call to create sustainable, accessible shelters; some, the call to create beauty and healing through the arts; some, the call to nurture children; some, the call to protect and restore the natural environment; some, the call to create agencies ensuring equitable treatment for all peoples; some, the call to advocate for and protect non-human species; some, the call to sit in silence for the hope and peace of the whole world.
We live in a time of precarious extremes, a time when our past unconscious or disrespectful actions continue to assault the integrity of our world. Whatever our individual call is from Ceres here in Vermont, we are all called to envision and create a world where humans are but one of the inhabitants on a planet to be shared by all and to be nurtured by all, where our human legacy is one of peace, sustainability, creativity and wholeness, and where each being invites the great unseen architects of Life to participate in healing what has been broken, protecting what has been saved, and perhaps even restoring what has been lost.
